A novel of fast-paced adventure, there's gun play enough to satisfy the biggest fans of the shoot-'em-up style. But it's also a story of friendship and loyalty. Once again, Best has penned a fine read. C. K. Crigger --Western Writers of America Roundup MagazineIn his story, the good guys have a conscience, but sometimes have to do hard things.  There is no fluff in this story, just straight-through action and good dialog.  Best has mastered the ability to tell a story end to end without jumping around.  His first-person writing style never feels contrived and he never resorts to Deus ex machina to resolve an improperly formed plot twist – there aren’t any.  Leadville is pure entertainment with great character development.  Louis Lamour fans will definitely approve! --Martin Sielaff, What Would The Founders Think?
Product Description When New York City shopkeeper Steve Dancy moved west to experience the frontier, he wound up embroiled in a deadly feud...a feud that he was forced to settle with guns. Now, all he wants to do is follow up on a few business interests, write about his adventures, and continue his exploration of the West.

But in the autumn of 1879, Joseph McAllen asks Dancy for help. Ute renegades have abducted a young girl near Mesa Verde, Colorado, and the Pinkerton captain wants him to join the rescue party. Surprisingly, the trail doesn't lead into the San Juan Mountains, but to Leadville—a rich mining town teeming with the worst elements of a raw frontier. Bitter feuds, vendettas, and greed turn the affair into a bloody conflict that spans the state.

Dancy has proved that he can handle himself in rough mining towns. But can this shopkeeper survive a dangerous mountain wilderness?

When Charlie Watson retired from the Army and returned home from Afghanistan, he looked forward to a life he had left on hold. Years later, with almost everything taken from him, he has only the family farm and his brother left. Andy Watson isn't in the best shape either, as a small town cop he's suffered for years under the mental burden of a fatal shooting and his subsequent downspiral into the bottom of a bottle. Each day has become a battle for the both of them, the enemy far more dangerous than any conjured from the swirling sands of the East or the surprisingly lethal country roads. It's a struggle to simply maintain their sanity, and sometimes they don’t appear to be winning. On a clear spring evening all that is compounded as they are drawn into the biggest scientific discovery of the millennia, something that may very well lead them to their death, after lives spent just ahead of it. Invasion rocks what little sense of peace they have, one from an enemy too horrible to contemplate, and another from a government that’s as shifty as it is dangerous. Faced with consequences bigger than any two men should, the Watson brothers must fight their way out of a newfound hell – their own backyard. Best: A. R. Curtis

Adult/High School—Walker takes a close look at past and present consumerism in the United States, positing that older forms of advertising are no longer successful. In their place, the trend has shifted to what the author calls "murketing," a mix of "murky" and "marketing." He argues that instead of being manipulated by marketing, consumers are using it to their advantage; and instead of being shaped by products, consumers are using them to express individual identity and social outlook. Told from the perspectives of both consumers and marketers, the book entwines historical fact, commentary from experts in the field, and pop-culture examples drawn from brand names such as Timberland, Sanrio, Apple, and Nike. It also incorporates conversations with CEOs of companies like American Apparel as well as start-up projects from the skateboarding and music industries. Walker examines all aspects of "murketing," including ethics, emerging technology, and commercialization versus underground movements. This book is both accessible and relevant to teens, with many of the examples being pulled from Generations Y and Z. It will be useful to those interested in business, advertising, or social trends.—Kelliann Bogan, Colby-Sawyer College, New London, NH Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From Booklist New York Times columnist and author (Letters from New Orleans, 2005) Walker makes no pretense at being a master of modern marketing. But he does, through intuitive, savvy observations of human and corporate behaviors, solidify his argument for what brands mean in today’s society. His claim that brands such as Hello Kitty and the iPod, among others, balance our need for both belonging and individuality is not revolutionary. So what’s new here? That Walker is one of the prime analysts dedicated to probing our minds, our behavior, and, specifically, our buying patterns. He addresses the demand for authenticity and the nearly accidental formation of consumer communities, almost in spite of commercial persuasion campaigns, creating a real connection that many Americans are seeking. And thanks to his scrutiny of today’s global companies, his examples, from Toyota’s Scion to the Austin Craft Mafia, prove his point: “You surround yourself only with who you are.” We’d add “and who you want to be.” Easy, colloquial, and passion-driven prose will help this tome reach the top of business booksellers’ lists. --Barbara Jacobs Buying In: The Secret Dialogue Between What We Buy and

Cap’n Fatty Goodlander grew up aboard the 52-foot John G. Alden schooner “Elizabeth,” built in 1924. He salvaged, repaired, and skippered his first boat—a holed 16-foot rowing skiff he discovered awash in St. Petersburg, Florida—at eight years of age. At 15, he purchased ($200) the derelict 1932 Atkin-designed double-ender “Corina” in Chicago—aboard which he eloped with his wife Carolyn in 1970. At 19 years of age, he began building “Carlotta,” their 36-foot, 20,000 pound Endurance ketch in Boston. In 1989, at age 37, he salvaged his $3,000 Hughes 38 “Wild Card” after Hurricane Hugo—a heavily damaged vessel, which he and Carolyn then sailed twice around the world while raising their daughter Roma Orion. Cap’n Fatty has written ten marine-related books (see www.fattygoodlander.com) and is now on his 52nd year of living aboard. He is currently the editor-at-large of Cruising World magazine, and recently had a series of radio spots on NPR. He and his wife Carolyn are, as this publication goes to press, leisurely cruising the Mediterranean Sea while continuing to trade words-for-money. Atlantic correspondent Shell (The Hungry Gene) tackles more than just discount culture in this wide-ranging book that argues that the American drive toward bargain-hunting and low-price goods has a hidden cost in lower wages for workers and reduced quality of goods for consumers. After a dry examination of the history of the American retail industry, the author examines the current industrial and political forces shaping how and what we buy. In the book's most involving passages, Shell deftly analyzes the psychology of pricing and demonstrates how retailers manipulate subconscious bargain triggers that affect even the most knowing consumers. The author urges shoppers to consider spending more and buying locally, but acknowledges the inevitability of globalization and the continuation of trends toward efficient, cost-effective production. The optimistic call to action that concludes the book feels hollow, given the evidence that precedes it. If Shell illuminates with sharp intelligence and a colloquial style the downside of buying Chinese garlic or farm-raised shrimp, nothing demonstrates how consumers, on a mass scale, could seek out an alternative or why they would choose to do so. (July) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Review "That cycle of consumption seems harmless enough, particularly since we live in a country where there are plenty of cheap goods to go around. But in her lively and terrifying book "Cheap: The High Cost of Discount Culture," Ellen Ruppel Shell pulls back the shimmery, seductive curtain of low-priced goods to reveal their insidious hidden costs. Those all-you-can-eat Red Lobster shrimps may very well have come from massive shrimp-farming spreads in Thailand, where they've been plumped up with antibiotics and possibly tended by maltreated migrant workers from Burma, Cambodia and Vietnam. The made-in-China toy train you bought your kid a few Christmases ago may have been sprayed with lead paint -- and the spraying itself may have been done by a child laborer, without the benefit of a protective mask. "Cheap" is hardly a finger-waggling book. This isn't a screed designed to make us feel guilty for unknowingly benefiting from the hardships of workers in other parts of the world. And Shell -- who writes regularly for the Atlantic -- isn't talking about the shallowness of consumerism here; she makes it clear that she, like most of us, enjoys the hunt for a good deal. "Cheap" really is about us, meaning not just Americans, but citizens of the world, and about what we stand to lose in a global economic environment that threatens the very nature of meaningful work, work we can take pride in and build a career on -- or even at which we can just make a living. -Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com "This highly intelligent and disturbing book provides invaluable insight into our consumer culture and should be mandatory reading for anyone trying to figure out our current financial mess. As Shell proves, the hunt for cheap products has hurt us all. Highly recommended for smart readers." -Library Journal "Diligent, useful cultural criticism, akin to Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation and Tom Vanderbilt's Traffic."-Kirkus Reviews "I just finished Cheap: The High Cost of Discount Culture by Ellen Ruppel Shell and I am now both disgusted and totally freaked out. Ed is hosting a round table discussion on this one in the coming weeks which I am a part of so I won't go into too much detail here but really, Shell has done an outstanding job of bringing together all the facets of our need to buy cheap: food, clothing, furniture, etc. She doesn't just talk Wal-mart (in fact she doesn't talk much about Wal-mart at all) but she does talk IKEA and Red Lobster and China and the history of discount shopping in our country (Woolworths, etc.) which is truly fascinating. Beyond all the info though, Shell's writing style is utterly and completely top notch. This is popular history/culture at its finest and after you read it, you will approach every single purchase you make with a high level of suspicion.   We have been roundly manipulated folks, for our entire lives. And while we all kinda know it, you have to read Cheap to really appreciate it. Staggering stuff." -Colleen Mondor, reviewer for Booklist, Bookslut, Eclectica Magazine and the Voices of New Orleans "Talk about timely!-in the midst of our economic confusion, Ellen Ruppel Shell talks good sense about cost, price, value-about what constitutes a bargain, and about what makes for a (literal) steal."-Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economy "Americans have always loved a good deal. But, as this courageous book argues, that love has evolved into a destructive obsession. Shell shows through in-depth reporting that our never- ending hunt for discounts has fed a plethora of social ills. And by moving our production to the world's lowest-cost labor markets, we have scarified such basic values as handcraftsmanship and product integrity. As Cheap ably proves, you get what you pay for."-Dana Thomas, author of Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster "There is no free lunch. Ellen Ruppel Shell powerfully argues that we have paid a high price for buying cheap goods. Hers is compelling story that will hopefully convince Americans that making different choices as consumers can fundamentally change our society-and the world."- Lizabeth Cohen, author of A Consumers' Republic "Around the world, people are being forced to reconsider the very idea of prosperity, and to ask what kind of wealth matters most and can be sustained. Cheap appears at just the right moment to enrich this discussion. This history of discounting and bargain-mania will change the way shoppers think about their next trip to the mall. As an examination of the global effects of the quest for rock-bottom prices, Cheap an important addition to arguments about America's economic future. This is a valuable book for a troubled time."-James Fallows, author of Postcards from Tomorrow Square "More stuff for less! -the American recipe for material well-being. Now Ellen Ruppel Shell takes a hard look at this apparently simple notion and finds it isn't so simple after all. Cheap pulls apart the old economic verities and subjects the glib new promises of Wall Street and globalization to scrutiny. How did we find ourselves in our current mess? Shell finds part of the answer in our confused ideas about what, exactly, is a bargain price."-Charles C. Mann, author of 1491 Cheap: The High Cost of Discount Culture: Ellen Ruppel

This Kurt Adler Musical Charlie Brown Tree is a fun, festive way to add to your holiday décor! This tree resembles the poor, bare tree Charlie Brown lovingly chooses for the Christmas play in the animated holiday classic, "A Charlie Brown Christmas". This musical tree is bent over with sparse needles on each branch, and has one red ball ornament hanging from the branches. It rests on a crossed brown stand. When activated, the tree plays the signature Peanuts theme song, "Linus and Lucy"! --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
